Brief

This is a collection of some of the finalized single/album artwork that I created for THE David Sosa! David commissioned me to create artwork for his promotional singles such as “About U” (performed with Jaspen) “Laugh“, “Let Me Know” (and all of its remixes), and “Toxic” (from his second album “Ups Downs and in Betweens“).

The BIG task was to design the cover art of his debut album “Journey to Love

Approach

Single Artwork

  • Laugh – Based on the vibe of “Laugh” and David wanting simplicity with single art, I opted for a simple headshot photo with with an orange overlay to “shine” over the greyness of the photo which was in line with the theme of the song: “I laugh laugh, ha ha ha ha. You won’t steal my joy”.
  • Let Me Know – “Let Me Know” is a more romantic and intimate R&B song so in my mind I immediately envisioned a focus shot of two hands holding. But it couldn’t be just any hand holding image. It had to be “warm and sensual”. I sourced the perfect image of 2 hands embracing in front of a deep red background which was perfect for the “passion” vibe this song conveys. After some edits and touch ups we landed on the final result below.
  • “About U” – The artwork for “About U” was a result of me wanting to continue the theme of the “Journey to Love” album cover; cracks and stones. But for “About U” I didn’t want the roughness displayed on the album cover. I wanted a stone that was more beautiful and “polished”. That’s when I thought of using black marble as a foundation. I then wanted to incoporate “Kintsugi”, the Japanese technique of repairing pottery with gold lacquer. That’s how the gold trim in the center and the gold text was conceived.
  • Toxic – David approached me about the single for his second album and described the concept. He wanted to me to visually convey what goes on in one’s mind when dealing with a toxic lover. The artwork is meant to represent “dissonance” with toxic colors such as green and black. The hourglass is meant to represent the time being wasted on this toxic lover. The hourglass is also meant to “magnify” into David’s mind showing his mental state.

Album Artwork

The theme of the album “Journey to Love” is one finding their strength to love once again after heartbreak. The concept of the artwork was to show David “cracked” but not totally shattered. He may bend a little, but he doesn’t break. This conveys his willingness to want to love again despite everything. This was an incredibly fun project to do and I am so happy with the end result!
